RFXL Images

RFXL stores images for games, interfaces and small rendering engines. It keeps the decoder integer-based and offers exact source colours or deliberately reduced colour precision.

A little technical detail

RGB24 or RGBA32, with alpha stored only when needed. The encoder chooses between palette, planar, raster and sparse-screen representations, using prediction, run-length coding, Rice codes or LZSS. Five profiles trade colour precision for size.

Comparison & examples

A synthetic 65 × 65 RGBA image from the release corpus. The pictures show the existing decoded outputs, not a browser implementation of RFXL. PNG is an exact, lossless reference. Results on this tiny fixture are not a general compression benchmark.

Encode & decode

Operation

Lossless preserves the browser's decoded RGBA pixels, not the original PNG file or its metadata. Images smaller than 64 pixels on either axis retain source precision. Processing stays in your browser.
