RFXL History

Development milestones

  1. Predictive image coding gained palette, planar, raster and sparse-screen candidates.
  2. MED prediction, bounded LZSS searches and faster Rice decoding reduced the cost of reconstruction.
  3. Five quality profiles added deliberate colour reduction, including Crappy.
  4. The decoder gained linear pixel loops and direct use of unpredicted streams; release hardening tightened size and mode validation.
  5. Standalone C and JavaScript ports added full-format decoding and a smaller raster encoder search. The website added local PNG conversion. Fifty codec conformance cases cover reference outputs, additional wire modes, cross-language encoder equality and malformed metadata; C checks use address and undefined-behaviour sanitizers.

These milestones summarize the reference module's documented development. This website describes generation 26 only.
